✦ Lower fat than most hard cheeses ~25g/100g ✦ High protein ~26g/100g ✦ Excellent calcium and phosphorus ✦ Good riboflavin and B12 ✦ Safe in pregnancy

Edam is a Dutch semi-hard cow's milk cheese with a smooth, slightly rubbery texture, mild flavour, and characteristic red wax rind (on the export version). It has a lower fat content than most hard cheeses (~25g/100g) while still providing excellent protein (~26g/100g) and calcium. It provides riboflavin, vitamin B12, and phosphorus. Its lower fat content makes it one of the more moderate-calorie hard cheeses. It is safe in pregnancy.

Preparation note

Edam's mild flavour and firm texture make it a versatile sandwich and snacking cheese. It slices cleanly and melts reasonably well. A good choice when a lower-fat hard cheese is wanted without sacrificing protein. The wax rind is not edible — remove before serving.

* % Daily Value is the proportion of an adult EU Nutrient Reference Value (NRV) supplied by 100g of this food. NRVs are the labelling standard — the same basis as the “%RI” figures printed on food packaging — so these percentages are directly comparable with a shop label. They are a single adult figure and do not vary by age or sex, which is why they sometimes differ from UK dietary reference values: the NRV for vitamin C is 80mg where the UK RNI is 40mg. When Nutriofia assesses your own intake in the reports and trackers, it uses the age- and sex-specific UK values instead.

Fibre is shown without a percentage. Our fibre values use the UK Englyst NSP method, while the published 30g daily goal is an AOAC figure — the two are measured differently and a single percentage would mislead. How we source and normalise our data →
