💊 What it does
St John's Wort (Hypericum perforatum) is one of the most extensively clinically studied herbal medicines for depression. Meta-analyses of clinical trials consistently show it is significantly more effective than placebo for mild-to-moderate depression, and comparable to standard antidepressants (SSRIs and tricyclics) with a more favourable side effect profile. It works through multiple mechanisms — inhibiting reuptake of serotonin, dopamine, and noradrenaline, and GABA modulation. However, it has the most significant drug interaction profile of any commonly used herbal supplement.
👤 Who needs it
People with mild-to-moderate depression who cannot or do not want to take prescription antidepressants. Note: clinical evidence is specifically for mild-to-moderate depression — it is not appropriate for severe depression. Those with seasonal affective disorder (SAD).
🥦 Food sources first
St John's Wort grows wild throughout Europe and is easily recognisable. It is not used as a food — it is exclusively a medicinal herb.
🗓 When to supplement
For mild-to-moderate depression as an evidence-based natural alternative to consider alongside lifestyle measures and with GP awareness. Must not be used alongside any prescription antidepressant medication. Must not be used for severe depression.
🏷 Best form to look for
LI 160 and WS 5572 are the most clinically studied standardised extracts. Standardised to 0.3% hypericin and 2-5% hyperforin. Consistency of standardisation is critical — variable extracts produce variable effects.
⏰ When to take it
Twice daily with meals for consistent effect. Effects typically seen after 4-6 weeks of consistent use.
