💊 What it does
Lactoferrin is an iron-binding glycoprotein found in milk, colostrum, tears, saliva, and other secretions, playing a key role in innate immunity. It binds free iron (preventing bacteria from using it), has direct antimicrobial and antiviral properties, modulates immune responses, reduces inflammation, and enhances iron absorption from the gut. Clinical evidence supports benefits for iron deficiency anaemia (particularly in pregnancy), reduction of recurrent ear infections in children, gut health, and immune function.
👤 Who needs it
Pregnant women with iron deficiency anaemia — lactoferrin enhances iron absorption without the GI side effects of ferrous sulphate. People with recurrent infections. Those with gut health concerns. Iron-deficient individuals who do not tolerate standard iron supplements well. Note: not suitable for vegans.
🥦 Food sources first
Lactoferrin is found in breast milk (very high), cow's milk (lower amounts), and whey protein. It is not present in meaningful amounts in plant foods.
🗓 When to supplement
For iron-deficiency anaemia particularly in pregnancy. For immune support. For gut health. Not for vegans.
🏷 Best form to look for
Bovine lactoferrin from whey. Glycosylated (native) form preserves biological activity better than hydrolysed.
⏰ When to take it
With meals. For iron absorption enhancement, take with iron-rich meals or iron supplements.
